Top 7 Hidden Gems in Miami

Feb 24, 2017

Miami

South Florida has many fantastic things to do, places to eat, and sites to see. People come from all over to check out our Miami style and soak up the sun on our beaches, and I’m glad they make the visit!

We’ve got some other wonderful places that, between you and me, I’d prefer to keep a secret amongst the locals. For whatever reason, these amazing places have escaped the notice of tourists and media.

Without further ado, here are my favorite hidden gems in Miami.

The Best of Miami

Crumb on Parchment

Like any working man, I often like a good sandwich for lunch. Wouldn’t it be great to have an award-winning chef make that sandwich at a reasonable price? Crumb on Parchment is Michelle Bernstein’s brainchild, made to create gourmet sandwiches which can be washed down with beer or wine. You can find amazing pastries, soups, and salads here as well. This little gem is tucked into a shopping center in the Miami Design District.

Wat Buddharangsi of Miami

You don’t need to be a Buddhist to visit Miami’s Buddhist temple. They welcome all visitors, so come and appreciate the beauty and serenity that this place has to offer. The resident monks are extremely friendly and are happy to show you the grounds. They will even teach you the basics of meditation. Wat Buddharangsi is an amazing place to visit for a memorable (and relaxing) experience.

Wynwood Brewing

In 2013, Miami finally got its first real craft brewery and why on Earth did it take so long? Everything that Wynwood does is a work of art, from their finely crafted La Rubia draft to the spray paint can tap handles. While Wynwood is famous for its art galleries and restaurants, you won’t find the brewery in the fancy part of town. You’ll have to head over a few blocks to the warehouse district to find this hidden gem.

Stoneage Antiques

Miami is home to plenty of great shopping, but few stores have such treasures as can be found at Stoneage Antiques. This isn’t your mother’s antique store; you can find nautical equipment, crazy props, and even cannons! This warehouse is crammed to the gills with everything you can imagine. Stoneage Antiques is simply beyond words, so my best advice would be to just go see it for yourself.

Ball & Chain

This one almost didn’t make the list, as Ball & Chain has become a piece of history and a Miami institution. While it does enjoy legendary status, the live music venue that has hosted such greats as Billie Holiday is a treasure for the locals more than it is a tourist destination. TripAdvisor rates Ball & Chain as the number one thing to do in the “Nightlife in Miami” category. If you like music, dancing, and cocktails in a Cuban atmosphere, then you’ll love Ball & Chain.

The Kampong

In the middle of a bustling metropolis there is a hidden oasis. The Kampong is a veritable Garden of Eden. This former Fairchild estate is home to nine acres that are brimming with thousands of exotic plants and species collected from David Fairchild’s adventures in Southeast Asia. This is a great afternoon visit, and you can take a guided tour or just wander around on your own.

L.C. Roti Shop

For authentic roti and a great dining experience, L.C.’s is a must-stop for those looking for the tastes of Trinidad. Meals are made to order, the owner is a hoot, and the food is amazing! Just be sure that you are ready to follow the rules at L.C. Roti Shop: no cell phones, no forks, and they only take cash.

Things To Do, People To See

So there you have it; these are some of my favorite local gems that have (mostly) managed to avoid becoming tourist attractions. Please, give them a try with your friends and family. Just don’t go telling everyone about my list!

It can be our little secret.
