Did you know that hurricanes with female names have historically caused more damage and killed more people than hurricanes with male names?
Seriously?! When I saw this article from the Washington Post, I have to admit that I was very curious to find out if this was a joke or if this was an article based on actual facts.
No offense to the ladies out there, but a groundbreaking new study has found this to be true!
According to the study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, people perceive female-named hurricanes as less dangerous and tend to take fewer precautions, thus resulting in more damage and deaths.
This is not to say that it shows a negative perception against women, but possibly just the opposite. Women (in general) tend to be more nurturing and less aggressive than men, so when a hurricane has a female name, people tend to feel less threatened and are therefore less willing or less likely to seek shelter.
It just goes to show, you should never underestimate the power of a woman!
